A very warm welcome to www.ski-injury.com!
This evidence-based website is now in its 15th year of operation and has been number one for snow sports safety in Google for more than 10 years. Uniquely dedicated to the latest and most comprehensive information on alpine snow sports injuries and their prevention, the aim is to present the latest information in a language that hopefully most people can understand. Written and maintained by Dr Mike Langran, this is an independent website that receives no direct incentives from the snow sport industry. It is updated regularly - usually weekly during the northern hemisphere winter with a bit of a breather in the summer months! Choose your topic(s) from the links on the left and use the contact link to get in touch with me if you can't find the information you are looking for.
Dr Mike Langran
Until recently, Mike was the ski patrol doctor at CairnGorm Mountain in the Scottish Highlands & a GP (family doctor) at the Aviemore Medical Practice - the only general practice in the UK that treats significant numbers of acute snow sports injuries. He had these roles for almost twenty years before moving to Australia in 2013 to fulfil a lifetime's ambition to become a doctor with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Mike was honoured to have been elected as President of the International Society for Skiing Safety (ISSS) at their meeting in Colorado, May 2011 and continues in this role presently. He is also Director of the Scottish Snow Sports Safety Study and remains UK secretary of SITEMSH (International Society for Skiing Traumatology and Winter Sports Medicine). Mike has been active in the field of snow sports injury research and management (both on and off the slopes) for almost 20 years now.
Despite being in Outback Australia, Mike still maintains his links to snow sports research although the time available to update this website is somewhat reduced.
Lecture and Research Presentations
As well as numerous invited lectures and research presentations both in the UK and abroad, Mike has published and contributed to many articles on snow sports safety in the medical and lay press - including The Times, Sunday Times, Telegraph, Wall Street Journal and more. He has also appeared on the BBC, ITV and has been a reluctant star in several UK television fly-on-the-wall series including "Medics of the Glen" and "Highland Emergency" in his role as a ski patrol doctor. As a result of his research & publications, his passion for safety and this website, Mike is regarded by his peers as the UK's leading expert in the field of snow sports safety.
Evidence Based Medicine on the slopes!
This web site now contains over 60 pages of detailed information on a whole host of topics relating to snow sports injuries and snow sports safety. As much as possible, the information is based on sound scientific fact rather than hearsay or gossip. In my life as a doctor, I have done a lot of work in the field of evidence based medicine. In addition, being an active researcher and journal reviewer myself helps me to sort the wood from the trees when it comes to fact and fiction. However, If there is anything that you read on the pages of this site that either doesn't make sense to you or that you disagree with, then please use the contact page to get in touch with me.
If you have any questions, try the FAQs section or send me an email via the contact page.
